High-resolution AI cameras are catching UK drivers red-handed in their cars like never before. Many offences that flew under the radar before are now being caught in the act, thanks to these tech marvels.
Shock as 72% of Motorists Unaware AI Cameras Are Watching
New research by Tempcover reveals a worrying gap in driver knowledge. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of UK motorists don’t even know AI cameras are live on the roads, spotting in-car offences like seatbelt dodging and phone use through the windscreen. The tech is being rolled out in different regions and on a trial bases for now, but the data shows a clear spike during Easter. More cars, stricter enforcement, and driver fatigue fuel this surge in penalties at holiday time.
Audi, Ford, Volkswagen Drivers Most Likely to Get Pinged
- Audi, Ford, and Volkswagen are the worst offenders when it comes to Easter road penalties.
- These three consistently rank in the “Top 10” for offences caught by pioneering forces.
The crackdown is set to ramp up in 2026 under the Government’s £115m AI-backed Road Safety Strategy, targeting distracted driving, seatbelt breaches, speeding, and impaired driving.
Drivers Still Guilty of Risky Habits Despite Fines
- 13% admit to using or seeing phone or tablet use behind the wheel for texting, music, or videos.
- 25% wrongly believe holding phones on their lap or below the dashboard hides them from detection—wrong! AI cameras see all through the windscreen.
- 9% confess to loosening seatbelts on long trips; 7% admit to removing them altogether.
- 26% say passengers abandon safe seating, such as putting feet on the dashboard—behaviours AI cameras are designed to spot.
Fines Hit Hard: £100 for Seatbelt Slip, £200 for Phone Use
Seatbelt offenders face immediate £100 fines that can escalate to £500 in court. Using a handheld phone—even when stuck in traffic—will cost £200 and incur six penalty points.
