Turkey has gifted a brave puppy to Mexico to carry on the legacy of Proteo, the heroic Mexican rescue dog who died while searching for survivors after a devastating earthquake.
Earthquake Killed Over 50,000 Across Turkey and Syria
The massive quake struck Turkey and parts of Syria, killing more than 50,000 people. Proteo lost his life on the ground in Adiyaman, Turkey, after exhausting hours searching in freezing temperatures. His trainer confirmed he died from sheer exhaustion, not falling debris.
Mexican Military Welcomes New Canine Recruit
- The puppy—still unnamed—is flying from Istanbul to Mexico City, where the Ministry of Defence team greeted the little hero warmly at the airport.
- Mexican military dog trainers, carrying other puppies in rucksacks, stood to attention during the arrival.
- Fans can vote for the puppy’s name: Proteo II, Arkadas (meaning “friend” in Turkish), or Yardim (“help” in Turkish).
Humanitarian Bonds Know No Borders
Mexico’s military ministry hailed the puppy as a symbol of global kindness, saying, “Humanitarian aid knows no limits or borders.”
Proteo’s ashes were brought back to Mexico and honoured in a heartfelt ceremony before being laid to rest. The ministry now awaits the new puppy with “open arms,” hoping it will bravely follow in Proteo’s pawsteps.
Mexico, a nation accustomed to earthquakes, relies heavily on its canine rescue teams, which have saved many lives, notably during the deadly 2017 quake.
