Woolwich Takes Down Dodgy Mopeds and E-Bikes in Big Bust
A major crackdown by Woolwich council, police, and immigration officers has hit illegal mopeds and e-bikes hard. The joint sweep targeted vehicles breaking moped laws, e-bike rules, and right-to-work regulations, 1 Now reports.
Safety Crackdown: Officials Draw the Line
Greenwich cabinet member Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan made it clear the message is tough but fair. “The safety of everyone on the streets of Royal Greenwich is a top priority for us – that’s why we’re helping to tackle illegal moped and e-bike riders.”
He warned about danger from dodgy rides: “Road-legal e-bikes are a safe, efficient, and sustainable way of getting around. But make no mistake – those which aren’t are dangerous for anyone who uses our borough’s roads, while shoddy batteries and poor-quality conversion kits are also fire hazards.”
Operation Focus: Seizing Illegal Wheels and Educating Riders
The crackdown didn’t stop at confiscations. Officers handed out 54 high-vis jackets, stickers, and a fresh e-bike safety factsheet to raise awareness among riders and locals. Transport for berkshire999.co.uk/where/london/" title="London" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">London pitched in with a leaflet explaining e-bike legality.
So far, Operation Focus has seized 64 illegal vehicles and distributed 344 high-vis jackets. The mission: enforce rules AND keep our roads safer.
Know the Rules: What Counts as a Legal E-Bike?
- EAPCs (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles) must stick to strict motor power and speed limits.
- They need clear markings showing the manufacturer’s name and power output.
Illegal mopeds and e-bikes aren’t just rule breakers – they’re putting lives at risk. With this crackdown, lawbreakers are on notice: play by the rules or lose your wheels.
