Bristol Dad Dons Batman Costume for Chilly Southampton Bridge Protest
A Bristol dad has taken his fight for his child’s safety to new heights—dressed as Batman and camped out on a central Southampton bridge for the second day in a row.

Nicki Hughes, 29, from Hartcliffe, Bristol, is braving freezing temperatures on a Southampton bridge. The former PE teacher insists he’ll protest “as long as it takes” to ensure his two-year-old son is safe.
Unlike typical protests aimed at visitation rights, Nicki says his fight is about more than seeing his child. “I’m not just asking to see him,” he said. “I want to know he’s safe.”
Ignored Pleas and Fear for Son’s Future
Nicki claims local social services have ignored his concerns. He fears his son’s life is at risk, drawing chilling comparisons to Baby P’s tragic case.
He explains how his former partner, also from Bristol, has lost custody of two other children. “I didn’t know about her alleged serious drug habit at first,” Nicki said. “She tricked social workers by using a neighbour’s urine sample to pass tests. Before my son was even born, social workers said they planned to take him.”
Support Rolls In Despite Police Visit
Police from Hampshire Constabulary checked on Nicki during his protest’s first day but have allowed him to stay, provided he keeps his megaphone language clean.
“People have been really supportive when I tell them why I’m here,” said Nicki. “Some have taken selfies with me, and plenty of drivers are honking horns in support.”
