British Tourist Busted in Turkey Over Coins Found While Snorkelling
A UK dad faces jail after trying to fly home with a handful of ancient coins he found while snorkelling in Turkey.
Snorkelling Souvenir Turns Sour
Toby Robyns, 52, from Southwick, West Sussex, was detained at Bodrum airport last Friday. Turkish authorities suspect him of “finding Turkish artefacts without notifying authorities” after he attempted to take 13 old coins home as a holiday keepsake.
Family Shocked as Dad Held in Milas Prison
The father-of-five found the coins during a two-week break in Turgutreis. Instead of a simple souvenir, the paramedic now faces a potential three-year prison sentence. He is currently being held at Milas prison, awaiting news on formal charges.
Family and UK Officials Rally
“This was harmless fun on a holiday,” said a family friend. “When he went to get his flight home they dragged him off and searched his hand luggage.”
A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed: “We are assisting a British man following his arrest in Bodrum and remain in contact with his family and the Turkish authorities.”
