Idris and Sabrina Elba Launch £160m COVID Relief Fund for Rural Farmers
Idris Elba and wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba have teamed up with the UN to launch a massive coronavirus relief fund aimed at protecting rural farmers worldwide from spiralling hunger and economic collapse.
£160m Appeal to Stop Global Food Crisis
The actor and activist duo, now UN Goodwill Ambassadors for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), unveiled the COVID-19 Rural Poor Stimulus Facility today. Backed by an initial $40 million from IFAD, they’re gunning to raise an extra $200 million to keep the wheels turning for small-scale farmers during lockdowns and market disruptions.
The fund aims to help farmers keep crops growing, businesses open, and access financial support despite the chaos wrought by the pandemic.
Warning Signs of a Looming Hunger Crisis
Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of IFAD, stressed the urgency: “Unless we act now, this health crisis will become a devastating food and hunger crisis.” He highlighted how diseases like Ebola and SARS showed the world’s problems can’t be confined. “We need to invest in keeping food systems running so vulnerable people can feed their families and earn an income.”
The Elbas Bring Firsthand Insight from Sierra Leone
In December, Idris and Sabrina visited IFAD-supported projects in Sierra Leone, where locals recovered from past crises thanks to farmer banks and community aid. Sabrina said: “This crisis shows we’re only as safe as our most vulnerable. Keeping rural food systems alive protects us all.”
Idris added: “Helping rich countries fight COVID-19 is vital. But so is backing rural food producers worldwide. If the virus rages anywhere, it’s a threat everywhere.”
Breaking Point for Small Family Farms
Rural areas house nearly 80% of the world’s poorest and hungriest people. Millions rely on small family farms that provide half the world’s calories. IFAD warns food prices are already rising as incomes drop, risking widespread hunger in developing nations.
To combat this, IFAD is ensuring farmers get seeds, storage, and access to markets despite transport shutdowns. The fund is a lifeline to stop rural communities from falling off a cliff in the global fight against COVID-19.
