The UK and Nigeria have sealed a major deal to speed up the deportation of foreign nationals who have no legal right to live in Britain. The pact, struck during Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s state visit, promises faster removals and tougher border controls.
Nigeria Finally Accepts UK Deportation Letters
The breakthrough? Nigeria will now recognise UK “letters” — vital ID documents used when passports are missing or invalid. Previously, Britain faced long delays waiting for emergency travel papers. That hassle is now history.
Border Chiefs Unite to Slash Illegal Immigration
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Nigeria’s Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo hammered out the deal, calling it a step toward “fair and well-managed migration.” Deportations to Nigeria have almost doubled to 1,150 a year. Overall removals of illegal migrants and foreign criminals soar close to 60,000 since last year’s election.
Minister for Border Security Alex Norris warned: “Those who abuse immigration systems or attempt to enter Britain unlawfully will be stopped and removed.”
Cracking Down on Immigration Crime and Online Scams
The agreement is more than just deportations. The UK and Nigeria will team up to smash gangs exploiting visa routes with fake jobs, sham marriages, and forged papers. A new, streamlined document-check system is on the way, backed by Nigeria’s promise of harsher punishments for immigration cheats.
They’re also targeting online fraud with a “fusion cell” of public bodies, banks, tech giants and telecom firms sharing real-time intel on romance scams, investment fraud, and crypto cons. This strategy helped the UK’s National Economic Crime Centre seize £7.5 million and arrest 400 suspects in Operation Henhouse earlier this year.
Earlier in 2025, the National Crime Agency teamed up with Nigerian police and Meta to shut down hundreds of crypto scam social media accounts targeting Brits, leading to seven arrests in Agbor, Nigeria.
Nigeria: A “Responsible Country” Ready to Partner
“Hopefully, this strengthened partnership will be a template for other bilateral understandings,” said Dr Tunji-Ojo. “Nigeria is committed to fulfilling its obligations as a responsible country.”
This landmark deal marks a new era in UK-Nigeria relations — tougher borders and smarter crime-fighting on both sides.
