Aleksei Panov, a Russian diplomat reportedly linked to the GRU intelligence agency, was found hanged inside Russia’s embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, on January 8. His death occurred just one day after Vladislav Baumgertner, a Putin-linked oligarch, mysteriously disappeared in the same region.

Panov, aged 41, officially held the position of third secretary but was believed to be a GRU captain. Embassy staff delayed notifying Cypriot police and restricted access to the scene, including blocking an independent autopsy and the examination of Panov’s alleged suicide note. His wife, Anastasia Panova, is employed at a secretive Moscow institute associated with advanced aerospace radar and Russian intelligence.

Independent reports indicate that Panov died by hanging “through the bronchus,” a method that has raised questions among experts. Cypriot authorities were not permitted to conduct an independent autopsy, which has deepened suspicions surrounding the circumstances of his death.

Meanwhile, Vladislav Baumgertner, former CEO of Russian potash giant Uralkali and known as a Putin-linked oligarch, disappeared on January 7. He was last seen leaving his home in Limassol dressed casually and subsequently stopped answering phone calls. His phone was later pinged near the Pissouri coast, prompting helicopter and drone searches that were hampered by poor weather conditions.

Baumgertner is reported to be a close friend of Russia’s ambassador to Cyprus. In 2013, he was involved in a diplomatic incident when arrested in Belarus but was released following direct intervention by President Vladimir Putin.

Dmitry Khmelnytsky, a Russian intelligence analyst, commented on the situation, stating to Ekho: “If this was purely personal, why hide his death for four days? There was clearly something sensitive. They were negotiating with Moscow. I don’t rule out that Panov might have been planning an escape, which was uncovered and ‘prevented’—typical of Soviet and Russian intelligence.” Khmelnytsky also noted that while there is no confirmed connection between Panov and Baumgertner, Panov likely handled spy technology near the embassy, highlighting how Russian embassies often function as intelligence hubs.

Official statements from Moscow described Panov’s death as a “profound personal tragedy” without providing further details or acknowledging his service. Cypriot officials have not found any confirmed link between the disappearance of Baumgertner and Panov’s death. However, the suspicious timing of these events—occurring within 24 hours and in close proximity—has fueled conspiracy theories and speculation about covert plots.

Baumgertner’s disappearance may be related to intense business rivalries, but the coincidental deaths and disappearances add to a growing list of mysterious incidents connected to Putin’s Ukraine war and underlying power struggles within Russia.
