Police Crack Down on Unauthorised Beach Visits in Southend

Police have been tackling groups ignoring lockdown rules by flocking to Southend’s seafront for a day at the beach.

“We Didn’t Think the Virus Was a Big Deal”

Officers caught several groups who admitted to travelling from out of town despite restrictions. One man told police: “We didn’t really think the virus was a big deal for us.” The groups were swiftly told to pack up and head home.

Megaphones Blast Lockdown Warnings

Police used megaphones to remind beachgoers that lockdown is still in place and people should only visit the seafront for exercise, not leisure. One officer said: “As tempting as the beach is looking, we thank those of you who are staying at home.”

More updates on enforcement expected as the situation develops.
