Three Arrested After Disorder at Crowborough Asylum Camp

Police swooped on three people following rowdy scenes outside the Crowborough Training Camp in East Sussex.

Tensions Boil Over at Asylum Accommodation Site

It all kicked off around 7.45pm on Friday, 23 January, when a peaceful group gathered by the camp entrance. Trouble erupted as a vehicle tried to leave. According to Sussex Police, “Three individuals became threatening and intimidating.” The suspects blocked the car, hurled abuse, and even struck it — terrifying the driver and passengers.

Who Got Banged Up?

  • 36-year-old man from Crowborough
  • 62-year-old woman from Crowborough
  • 54-year-old man from Newhaven

All three were arrested early Saturday on suspicion of offences under Section 4A of the Public Order Act. They remain in custody awaiting further action.

Police Clampdown and Calm Community Nerves

Chief Superintendent James Collis spoke out about local fears linked to the camp’s use for asylum seekers. He said while police support peaceful protests, they will not stand for violence or intimidation.

“There was a small group within the gathering that acted in a threatening and intimidatory manner to people going about their lawful business… This behaviour is not acceptable,” he said.

Extra patrols have been deployed in Crowborough and surrounding areas to keep the peace and reassure residents. Collis warned: “Anyone committing criminal acts can expect robust action.”

Sussex Police urged locals to report concerns directly to officers on patrol or visit their nearest police station. They also reminded the public that the Home Office manages the site and handles its security, advising site-specific worries be directed there first.
