Rebecca Ikumelo, a 33-year-old mother of two, tragically lost her life after a chaotic concert at Brixton’s O2 Academy on Thursday night, December 15. Approximately 3,000 people, many without tickets, stormed Nigerian star Asake’s show, causing a deadly crowd crush. Rebecca passed away early on Saturday morning, December 17.

Two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain in critical condition among the eight people hospitalised following the incident.

The Metropolitan Police have launched an urgent investigation after the event spiralled out of control. Officers are reviewing distressing videos circulating on social media. So far, one woman has been arrested for assaulting a police officer. Meanwhile, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is examining claims of police misconduct, including an officer reportedly pushing a concertgoer. The Metropolitan Police have stated that there is no evidence of wrongdoing at this time.

Just one day before the tragedy, Rebecca posted a heartfelt YouTube video titled MY KIDS BEDTIME ROUTINE | AUTISM AWARENESS. In the video, she and her family wear festive pyjamas and decorate a Christmas tree. Rebecca lovingly describes how she puts her children to bed. Three days prior, she had taken her boys to meet Santa Claus, adding to the heartbreak of her loss.

Nigerian artist Asake, whose concert was cut short due to the chaos, expressed his sorrow: “I am devastated by the news that Rebecca Ikumelo, who was in critical condition since Thursday, has sadly passed away. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family at this difficult time. Please keep her family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Author Toni Tone shared a tribute, saying, “This photo was taken the day I last saw Rebecca. She was a stunning woman who exuded positivity and was dedicated to being the best version of herself for her children. She was also a key figure in raising awareness of autism spectrum disorder. My thoughts are with her family.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan described Rebecca’s death as “heartbreaking” and sent condolences to her loved ones. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove appealed for witnesses to come forward, acknowledging the “upsetting images” circulating and emphasising the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The packed concert marked the finale of Asake’s UK tour. The O2 Academy Brixton, which has a capacity of 4,921, was overwhelmed by an estimated 3,000 additional gatecrashers. Despite Asake’s warnings for fans not to attend without tickets, many ignored the instructions.

Academy Music Group, the operators of the venue, expressed deep sorrow and sympathy for Rebecca’s family and all those affected by the tragedy.
