A man has been arrested following a violent attack on two people near The White Hart pub in Newton Abbot in the early hours of this morning.

Devon and Cornwall Police were called to East Street just before 1 AM after reports that a man and a woman had been attacked by another man. Emergency crews arrived to find a woman in her 40s and a man in his 50s suffering injuries. Both victims received treatment at the scene before being taken to Torbay Hospital. Police have confirmed that their injuries are serious but not life-threatening or life-changing.

The suspect fled the scene, prompting a swift police search. Officers tracked him to a nearby address and arrested a man in his 50s on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder. He remains in custody as inquiries continue.

Detective Inspector Nicky Baker said: “This was an isolated incident. We believe the suspect and victims know each other. Several people witnessed the attack, and we’re urging anyone who hasn’t spoken to us yet to come forward. If you caught anything on your phone, dashcam, or CCTV, please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Devon and Cornwall Police online or call 101, quoting crime reference number 50250046524.

Residents in the usually peaceful Newton Abbot community were left stunned by the attack. Social media has been buzzing with shock, although many have praised the quick police response. High-visibility patrols will be increased in the area in the coming days to reassure locals.

As the investigation unfolds, the community hopes for justice and a swift resolution to this unsettling incident.
