Life-or-Death Saves Take Centre Stage

At the star-studded Chief Constable’s Awards Ceremony held on 29 April 2025 at Kent Police College, fearless police officers and everyday heroes were celebrated for stepping up when lives were on the line.

Several winners also bagged certificates from the Royal Humane Society for their outstanding courage.

Top Lifesaving Heroes Revealed

  • PC Grant Strong and Alison Martin-Smith earned plaudits for their quick-thinking first aid on a man who suffered cardiac arrest on a bus in Gillingham last November. Their rapid action brought the man back before paramedics took over.
  • Sergeant Robert Barrett and five officers were hailed for saving a man with a self-inflicted injury at a Maidstone property in August 2024. Sgt Barrett’s crucial first aid kept the man alive until he was airlifted to hospital.
  • Off-duty Sergeant 1 Sharp sprang into action with CPR and a defibrillator to rescue a man who collapsed during a tennis match in Gillingham.
  • PC 1 Lewis showed compassion and professionalism on her first case as a Family Liaison Officer, helping reunite a missing child with their family in Medway.
  • Brave public member Shannon O’Donnell saved her uncle’s life by performing CPR at her home in Chatham, joined by Special Constable Laura Meeks from the Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service Joint Response Unit.

Chief Constable Praises Everyday Heroes

Chief Constable Tim Smith lauded the courage of the award recipients:

“Every day Kent Police officers risk their lives to keep the public safe. I am incredibly proud of their bravery and dedication. Many families owe their loved ones’ lives to these lifesaving actions.”

He also thanked the members of the public who stepped up in emergencies, proving that heroes come in all forms.
