A fire erupted in a cell at HMP Winchester this afternoon, sending shockwaves across Romsey Road. Three fire engines and five ambulances rushed to the scene, battling the blaze on B wing.
Fire crews from Winchester and Eastleigh tackled the flames, while paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service scrambled to assist. “We received a call from the fire service at 3.02pm about a fire in a prison cell on B wing,” a spokesperson confirmed.
Social media exploded with claims of a riot erupting inside the prison. Users reported multiple cell fires and a heavy presence of police, fire teams, and ambulances. However, authorities have yet to confirm any disturbance beyond the fire.
Specialised Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and rapid response units were deployed. The inmate was quickly removed from the burning cell and is now under the watchful eye of the prison’s healthcare team.
Hampshire Fire & Rescue remained tight-lipped about the exact cause. They arrived shortly after 3pm and wrapped up their operation just after 4.15pm.
