A silver Hyundai Ioniq caused chaos on the M25 motorway after refusing to stop and driving the wrong way, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision near Potters Bar.

The incident began on Tuesday 27 January at approximately 1.20pm near junction 23 on the clockwise M25. Police were alerted when the Hyundai failed to stop in Potters Bar town centre and led officers on a pursuit through the area before moving onto Southgate Road.

The vehicle then entered the motorway at junction 24, travelling back towards junction 23 against the flow of traffic. Due to the extreme danger posed, police decided to call off the active chase.

The Hyundai continued driving the wrong way until a marked police car executed a tactical stop. Officers arrested a 43-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs, and going equipped. He remains in custody for questioning.

The collision involved a white Audi, a black Jaguar, a roadside assistance vehicle, and a minibus. Paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service treated the driver of the Audi, a man in his 60s, who was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Sergeant Tim Davies from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit issued an urgent appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage. He said: “I am appealing for independent witness accounts relating to this collision. If you were driving in the area and saw anything, please come forward to assist our enquiries. I’m especially keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage from the time. Upload any clips via herts.police.uk/dashcamupload.”

Witnesses can also contact Sergeant Davies directly by email at [email protected], report online at https://orlo.uk/WTRi0, use the web chat at https://orlo.uk/zaoSC, or call 101 quoting ISR 281 (Tuesday 27 January). To remain anonymous, people can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
