59-Year-Old Lorry Driver Arrested After Fatal Halifax Hit-and-Run
A 59-year-old HGV driver was arrested following a deadly hit-and-run in Halifax town centre that left a pedestrian dead.
Crash Brings Halifax Traffic to a Standstill
The collision happened at around 10:29am on Broad Street, near the Orange Street crossroads. Emergency crews swarmed the scene with police cars and ambulances. Traffic monitoring service Inrix confirmed Broad Street was closed both ways, causing chaos from Waterhouse Street to Pellon Lane. Drivers were warned to steer clear.
72-Year-Old Pedestrian Dies at the Scene
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the victim, a 72-year-old man, was pronounced dead on the spot. The HGV driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.
“Emergency services are at the scene of what is thought to be a serious road traffic collision on Broad Street, Halifax. Motorists are advised to avoid the area,” said West Yorkshire Police.
