Smoke Fills Flat as Officer Charges In to Save Suspect
Constable Kevin McGhee didn’t hesitate when a frantic call came from a smoke-filled top-floor flat in Lanarkshire. A man suspected of stabbing his partner refused to leave, while thick black smoke filled the building. With the stairwell choking with smoke and visibility near zero, McGhee smashed through the door to find the suspect.
Daring Rescue Amid Blazing Smoke
Despite searing heat and choking smoke, McGhee grabbed the suspect and dragged him to safety. But the hero cop wasn’t done yet. He plunged back inside to check for others trapped, braving deadly conditions without a second thought.
Bravery Award for Fearless Officer
McGhee’s heroic gamble has earned him a nomination at the Chief Constable’s Bravery Awards. Ever humble, he gave credit to his fellow officers and partners from Scottish Fire and Rescue and the Scottish Ambulance Service.
“We face tough situations every day,” McGhee said. “Saving lives is the heart of our duty.”
Police Horse Cathcart Honoured for Years of Service
The ceremony will also celebrate Police horse Cathcart, who’s bagged the Animal Lifetime Achievement Award after 13 years on duty. Cathcart has been a steady presence at huge events like the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Scottish Cup finals, COP26, and presidential visits.
Known for expert crowd control and a calm demeanour, Cathcart has kept thousands safe and supported officers through thick and thin.
Two very different heroes, one powerful message: courage in policing comes in many forms.
