Armed police swarmed Sandown, Isle of Wight, after reports emerged of a man claiming to have a gun this afternoon.

Just after 4pm on Monday, officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s joint armed response and roads policing unit rushed to High Street, Sandown. They detained several people outside the Sandown library amid the tense incident.

The drama began at 3:46pm when a member of the public alerted police about a man on Avenue Road who said he had a firearm. Officers quickly tracked down the 46-year-old homeless man, questioned him, and then released him with no further action.

Despite the scare, Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the matter was resolved without incident.
