Nick Blackburn, the no-nonsense ex-Flying Squad detective, has been appointed as the new South Area Commander, taking charge of one of London’s most challenging policing areas. His jurisdiction covers Croydon, Sutton, and Bromley, three boroughs currently facing significant crime and community tensions.
Blackburn succeeds DCS Andy Brittain, who was recently promoted to Scotland Yard. As head of the South Area Basic Command Unit (BCU), Blackburn is responsible for a large and diverse area, tackling issues ranging from violent youth gangs to urban crime hotspots.
In an exclusive interview with UKNIP, Blackburn said, “I asked for this role. My focus is simple — crime suppression through intelligence, visibility and community trust.”
With over 25 years of experience in the Metropolitan Police, Blackburn’s career has been marked by steady progression and expertise. He began his policing career in Bexley in 1999, gained valuable experience with the elite Flying Squad robbery unit, and later served as a detective sergeant in Southwark before taking on his current leadership role.
Now leading the South Area BCU, Blackburn faces significant challenges, including crime in Croydon town centre, youth violence in Bromley, and suburban crime issues in Sutton. He aims to implement new policing tactics to serve nearly one million residents across these boroughs.
The Metropolitan Police is currently under scrutiny due to recent scandals and a rise in knife crime, particularly in South London. Blackburn acknowledges the pressure and the need for change. He stated, “We need to be proactive, not reactive. That means more visibility, smarter targeting of offenders, and honest engagement with the public.”
He has pledged a “zero tolerance approach to violence” while focusing on rebuilding community trust and enhancing support for vulnerable groups.
Local leaders have expressed support for Blackburn’s appointment. One Croydon councillor commented, “We need a leader who won’t flinch from the reality on our streets — Blackburn looks like that leader.”
Blackburn will oversee frontline patrols, safeguarding efforts, and major crime investigations across the South Area BCU, aiming to improve safety and community relations in Croydon, Sutton, and Bromley.
