A man was arrested in Harwich, Essex, in the early hours of Tuesday, 30 November, under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. He is suspected of preparing or instigating terrorist acts, in breach of section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Officers, supported by Essex Police, are continuing to search the property connected to the suspect. The man remains in custody at an Essex police station as investigations proceed.
The arrest is linked to suspected extreme right-wing terrorism. Authorities have stated that there is no immediate danger to the public. It is important to note that this arrest is not related to the murder of Sir David Amess MP.
Commander Richard Smith, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “I’d like to reassure the people of Essex and beyond that we’re not aware of any imminent threat linked to this arrest.”
He added, “With the terrorism threat level now ‘severe’, I urge the public to stay alert. If you see or hear anything suspicious, report it immediately.”
“Our officers work round the clock to keep you safe. Your vigilance and reports are vital in stopping those who seek to harm us.”
Every year, thousands of public reports help police prevent terrorist threats. If you notice anything suspicious, you are urged to inform the authorities confidentially via 0800 789 321 or online at www.gov.uk/ACT.
