A driver had a lucky escape this morning after his car skidded off the eastbound M27 and crashed into a hedgerow near J5 Eastleigh Airport. The incident occurred just before 7.30am amid heavy rain affecting the south’s roads.

The sky-blue Mercedes spun out, crossing three lanes of the busy motorway before crashing into a grass gully and ending up in a hedge.

Emergency crews were quick to arrive at the scene. Hampshire Road Policing and Highways England closed one lane to manage traffic flow. Hampshire Fire and Rescue dispatched two fire engines along with the Rescue Support Unit from Cosham, although the Rescue Support Unit was not required.

Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service attended the scene and checked the driver at the roadside.

Ravenscroft recovery specialists arrived to winch the Mercedes back onto the hard shoulder. Spotters slowed traffic in both directions, causing delays as drivers slowed to view the aftermath of the crash.
