A major Hampshire motorway is experiencing severe traffic disruption this lunchtime after a dust cart lorry was blown over by strong winds near a busy junction.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after 11am following reports of the overturned vehicle between junctions 11 and 12 on the M27.
Police have closed all traffic from Fareham attempting to join the motorway, as the lorry remains stranded in lane three of the busy eastbound carriageway, causing significant congestion.
Firefighters from Fareham and Cosham responded quickly to secure the scene. Despite their efforts, lanes two and three on the eastbound side remain closed, resulting in a traffic jam stretching for miles as drivers try to navigate past the incident.
South Central Ambulance Service has deployed their Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the location. Although initial reports mentioned a possible air ambulance landing, this did not occur.
Fire crews have maintained safety at the site while a specialist recovery firm from Boarhunt was called in to manage the major cleanup operation.
In addition to the eastbound closures, one lane of the westbound carriageway near the crash site is also shut, further contributing to the traffic chaos.
Motorists are advised that the eastbound lane closures could remain in place until 7pm or later this evening. Commuters are urged to expect delays and consider alternative routes where possible.
