Cambridgeshire’s top crime-busting canine, PD Luna, is retiring after more than seven years of dedicated service. The four-legged hero has been instrumental in keeping the region safe through her remarkable police career.

Luna’s journey began at just 14 months old when she was rescued from the streets by Dogs Trust. She quickly became a vital member of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Dog Unit, specialising in tracking drugs, cash, and firearms. Throughout her career, Luna proved herself to be a true crime-fighting superstar.

She was deployed to major events and sensitive locations, including busy beaches and conference centres. Luna played a key role in high-profile operations such as the security for the 2021 G7 summit. She also sniffed out illegal guns near the Ukraine-Slovakia border and assisted in searches at St Paul’s Cathedral on the anniversary of the 7/7 bombings.

Her handler, PC Paul Huggett, said: “Luna has been a huge source of pride. The scale of operations we’ve worked on together is incredible. Now she’s enjoying retirement with my family, and she’s settled in perfectly.”

As Luna steps down from active duty, she is entering a comfortable retirement supported by the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals. This organisation will ensure she remains healthy and well cared for after years on the frontline.

From an abandoned rescue pup to a trusted crime-fighting companion, Luna’s story highlights the bravery and dedication of police dogs. Here’s to a long and happy retirement for this true four-legged legend.
