Three Men Jailed After Tracking Device Snags Burglars in North London
Three burglars are behind bars thanks to a tracking device on a work van that linked them to a daring daylight raid. The Met’s Flying Squad cracked the case after executing early-morning warrants in Camden.
Burglary Crew Caught Red-Handed
- Connor Patterson, 24, of NW3, pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court on 14 May.
- Charlie Durkin, 29, aka Charlie Knight, of N1, admitted guilt earlier at Harrow Crown Court.
- Lee Smith, 27, of N19, also pleaded guilty at Harrow.
All three were sentenced to three years and eight months each on 15 May at Wood Green Crown Court.
How They Got Busted
The drama started on 24 November 2019, when the victim returned home to his Barnet house after a weekend away. A neighbour had called, saying the alarm was blaring and lights were on. Entry was forced through a first-floor window.
The burglars left a messy scene — drawers ripped open, cabinets smashed, and a safe stolen containing sentimental jewellery worth over £20,000.
Forensics found a torn piece of blue fabric at the window frame. DNA tests revealed a one-in-a-billion match to Patterson. CCTV and ANPR footage showed a white Transit van linked to the suspects, owned by a Camden construction firm.
Crucially, the van’s tracking device placed Durkin behind the wheel on the day of the crime. Phone records confirmed Durkin and Patterson at the scene, with Durkin calling a number registered to Smith during the raid.
Flying Squad Praise For Teamwork And Forensics
“I am extremely grateful for the help from forensics and local officers whose teamwork gave us this positive result,” said Detective Sergeant Gary Taylor.
“This case shows the very best of the Met – officers working relentlessly across departments to catch criminals and get justice for Londoners.”
Forensics lead Phil Kaye added, “The forensic evidence against Patterson was undeniable. Our experts often go unrecognised, but their work was crucial in locking these offenders up.”
On 7 April, with the Met Commissioner present, police swooped to arrest all three suspects. Charged the next day, they now face years behind bars.
