A 15-year-old boy was arrested after a brutal hammer attack took place on High Street, Melksham, just after midnight on Saturday, 18 October. The victim, a man, sustained serious injuries during the incident involving two masked men dressed in black riding bicycles.

Wiltshire Police responded swiftly, sealing off Bank Street and High Street overnight to allow forensic teams to investigate the scene thoroughly. The police cordon was lifted by the afternoon, but the investigation remains ongoing.

The arrested teenager is currently on bail as enquiries continue. Meanwhile, the second attacker, who was also masked and on a bicycle, remains at large.

The victim has since been discharged from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Detective Chief Inspector Penny Andrews addressed community concerns, stating, “This incident and the large police presence in the town will have undoubtedly caused concern for many residents. I would like to assure you that we believe this was an isolated incident and there was no risk to the wider public.”

Detective Andrews added, “Enquiries to trace the outstanding suspect are progressing and I would appeal to any witnesses to please come forward. We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage or who saw two males in dark clothing cycling around the town just before the attack.”

Residents with any information or footage related to the early hours of Saturday morning in Melksham are urged to contact Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting crime reference 54250138927.
