A quiet Leicestershire village was left in shock after Daniel Cook was sentenced for the brutal killing of his 72-year-old mother, Ellen Cook, in Littlethorpe.
On the evening of Sunday, 11 May, emergency services were called to Biddle Road after Mrs Cook was found with multiple stab wounds. Despite the desperate efforts of passersby and paramedics, she died at the scene.
Witnesses quickly identified Daniel Cook, 39, who was seen pacing outside the family home holding a knife and refusing to cooperate with the police.
Police faced a tense standoff and used a Taser to safely arrest Daniel on suspicion of murder.
At Leicester Crown Court, Daniel Cook pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
On Friday, 12 December, he was handed a hybrid sentence, beginning with secure hospital detention before being transferred to prison when considered fit.
Detective Superintendent Mark Sinski from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit paid tribute to the victim’s family, saying, “This was a horrific incident with very tragic and heartbreaking consequences. A family has been left utterly devastated.”
He added, “The family of Mrs Cook have shown immense bravery throughout the investigation. My thoughts remain with them at this most difficult time. We thank the witnesses who helped at the scene and supported our enquiries to find answers for Mrs Cook’s family.”
