Thomas Sykes, 41, has been sentenced to 18 years and seven months in prison after being found guilty of murdering his 67-year-old father, Tony Sykes, in Tamworth. The brutal attack shocked the local community and led to a grim discovery behind their shared flat.

The crime occurred on 19 August 2022, when neighbours raised concerns after not seeing Tony for several days. Police became suspicious of Thomas and conducted a search of the garden at their flat. They found Tony’s body concealed inside a cardboard box behind a shed.

Nearby, officers discovered a freshly dug, grave-sized hole along with gardening tools, indicating that Thomas had planned to bury his father. Bloodstains were also found on the bedroom carpet and cabinet. Two sections of blood-soaked carpet had been cut out and discarded inside a black bin bag hidden in a wheelie bin.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Tony had suffered severe head and facial injuries and had been deceased for several days before the discovery.

Despite the overwhelming forensic evidence, Thomas claimed during the trial that he had found his father already dead and panicked, leading him to hide the body while planning a burial. However, the jury rejected this defence and found him guilty of murder after a two-week trial.

The court also heard that Thomas had used Tony’s bank card following the killing. He was remanded to serve his sentence immediately, with no possibility of parole for over 12 years.

Detective Superintendent Cheryl Hannan commented on the case: “This is a tragic case of the death of a man at the hands of his own son. I am pleased with the sentence and that justice has been served.” She also praised the community’s role, saying: “Their diligence ensured Tony was found and could be laid to rest appropriately.”

Drone footage released by police showed the eerie scene in the garden and the grave hole. Neighbours described Tony as a “quiet but friendly” man who always greeted those around him. The murder has deeply affected both the Burton-on-Trent and Tamworth communities.
