London’s New Hi-Tech Speed Cameras Catching Drivers Off Guard
London’s roads just got a whole lot trickier for speeders. Transport for London (TfL) is launching stealthy new radar-based speed cameras that don’t flash or use the usual white lines on the road. This tech upgrade is Mayor Sadiq Khan’s latest move to clamp down hard on reckless drivers.
Stealth Mode: No Flash, No Warning
Forget the old speed cameras that flash bright and rely on white markings. These new gadgets use 4D radar coupled with a 4K colour camera – but no visible flash. That means motorists won’t get a fair warning. Plus:
- No white speed-check lines on the roads.
- Cameras mounted high, blending in with street poles and furniture.
- Speeders will only know they’ve been caught when a ticket arrives in the post.
High-Tech Gear Nab ‘Ghost Plates’ & Cover More Lanes
The RedSpeed Sentio Shield cameras don’t just clock speed – they can spot dodgy ‘ghost plates’ that try to trick ANPR cameras by bouncing away light. TfL says these new rigs focus solely on speed enforcement but boast sharper, clearer images day or night.
Each camera can cover up to five lanes in both directions – a big leap from the current three-lane cap. That means even busier roads will see tighter speed monitoring.
Khan’s Vision Zero: Erasing Road Deaths by 2041
This camera trial is a key part of Mayor Khan’s Vision Zero plan, which aims to wipe out road fatalities across London by 2041. Other ideas in the pipeline include:
- Slashing speed limits to a max of 40mph
- Rolling out more 20mph zones
- Potentially charging SUV drivers a ‘polluter’s tax’ like Paris
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security and Enforcement, said: “Upgrading our camera network is vital to maintaining strong, consistent enforcement, and together with the Met we are using every tool available to deter speeding, reduce road danger and save lives.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Donna Smith added: “The Met will use every tool available, including new radar-based camera technology, to deter dangerous driving and support Vision Zero’s ambition of eliminating deaths on London’s roads.”
What Londoners Must Know Now
- Twenty new camera locations are being trialled in high-risk speeding hotspots.
- Road signs will still warn drivers of speed cameras, but the devices themselves stay discreet.
- This crackdown targets persistent speeders on busy urban roads – so watch your speed or face the fine.
London’s war on speeders just got stealthier and tougher. Don’t get caught out by these hidden eyes!
