A reckless driver who caused a major crash that shut down a key Southampton road for hours has been banned from driving. Ryan Vincent, 33, from Holbury, was found guilty of careless driving and uninsured motoring at Aldershot Magistrates Court – in his absence.
The court heard that on December 27 at 1.15pm, Vincent was driving a blue BMW on the A35 heading out of Southampton. While attempting to overtake a Peugeot, he lost control of the vehicle, smashing into the nearside barrier before colliding with the Peugeot and the central reservation.
The impact was so severe that the BMW lifted off the ground and crossed into oncoming lanes, where it struck a Volkswagen and a Citroen before flipping onto its roof. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured, and Vincent sustained only minor injuries.
Dash cam footage shown in court prompted the magistrate to describe the crash as “horrifying”. Vincent was banned from driving for 14 days and received six penalty points on his licence for driving without insurance. He was also fined £320, with additional court costs of £40 and a £20 victim surcharge.
PC Mike McRoyall from Totton Roads Policing Unit commented on the incident: “This was a serious collision that closed a major route in and out of Southampton for hours, causing huge disruption. Vincent’s careless attempt to overtake triggered a terrifying chain reaction that could have caused serious injuries. Many innocent drivers were caught up in this nightmare. It was pure luck no one was badly hurt.”
He added, “We hope this dash cam footage sends a strong message that reckless driving is never worth the risk. One bad choice can wreck lives – including your own. We will take action to make sure justice is served.”
The shocking dash cam video has been released as a stark warning to all motorists to drive with care or face the consequences.
