Paul May, 46, was found dead at a London Road property amid an ongoing murder investigation. The tragic death has deeply affected the Great Wakering community and his family.

Police were called to the London Road address following concerns for Paul May’s welfare. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paul’s family described him as “the life and soul of the party” and “incredibly quick-witted.” He was one of seven brothers and was well known for his humour and talent.

His younger sister said: “Paul was a son, a brother, and a father, and his loss really hurts. We are so very sad and his death feels incredibly unfair. He could turn his hand to anything – music, sports, or art – usually with minimal effort. He loved his art. In 2013, he was commissioned by C2C to create the artwork for the boards outside Southend East railway station. He was really proud of that. Knowing that his work brightens up people’s day as they head to work is a comfort to us. It means a piece of him will always be here, having a positive impact on others.”

On Tuesday, police arrested 44-year-old Abir Miah, of London Road, Westcliff, on suspicion of murder. He has now been charged with the murder of Paul May and is due to appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 21.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and urge anyone with information to come forward, especially those who saw people entering or leaving the property between early Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. The address is located between two shops opposite Beedell Avenue.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of Paul during this exceptionally difficult time. The investigation has been fast-paced and complex, but thanks to my team’s hard work, we have charged a suspect.”
