Leeds Man First to Face New Domestic Abuse Strangulation Charge
An 18-year-old man from Leeds has made West Yorkshire Police history. He’s the first to be charged under the new offence of non-fatal strangulation following a June 9 incident in Wortley.
First Court Appearance and Bail
The man appeared at Leeds Magistrates on June 10, where he was granted conditional bail. He’s due back in court on July 20 to face the serious charge under Section 47 assault and non-fatal strangulation.
New Domestic Abuse Law Comes Into Force
This charge marks a big moment under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, which introduced non-fatal strangulation as a criminal offence nationwide on June 7, 2022. The law carries a hefty maximum sentence of five years in prison, underlining the gravity of these attacks.
Police Vow Tough Stance on Domestic Abuse
Our officers have secured this charge under the new legislation introduced last week aimed at tackling domestic abuse,” said DCI Sarah Lambert of Leeds District Police.
West Yorkshire Police is committed to using its powers to combat this type of abuse, including non-fatal strangulation. This crime is extremely dangerous and can cause severe trauma for victims. We are determined to investigate perpetrators and fight violence against women and girls.”
