Baby nurse Lucy Letby, who is accused of murdering seven infants and attempting to kill ten more at Chester’s Countess Hospital, has sent shocking texts about her victims, according to new evidence presented in court. The 32-year-old denies all 22 charges against her.
On the night of June 8, 2015, Letby allegedly murdered Child A by injecting air into the baby’s bloodstream. Less than two hours after her shift ended, she searched Facebook for the baby’s mother. The following day, Letby attempted to kill Child A’s twin sister, Child B, using the same method.
The court heard that Letby repeatedly searched Facebook for the twins’ mother multiple times over the subsequent months. Messages from Letby to nursing staff showed her as distressed yet oddly casual. She wrote, “I haven’t gotten much sleep. I don’t want to see my parents, but it has to be done.” In another message, she said, “When we took him to the mortuary, he was crying on the floor saying, ‘Please don’t take our baby away.’ It’s heartbreaking. It’s the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do.” She also added, “I’m hoping for a better one tonight.”
After Child B collapsed but later recovered, Letby messaged a nurse saying, “It was awful. He died very suddenly and unexpectedly just after handover. We are awaiting post-mortem results.” When told “I wasn’t having a great run,” Letby responded, “I wasn’t supposed to be in either.” She also described photographing babies’ hand and footprints, highlighting parents’ fears of losing their children.
Further exchanges revealed Letby’s apparent awareness of multiple infant deaths. When colleagues hinted about the strange deaths of three babies, Letby asked, “What do you mean?” and commented on the babies’ fragile conditions. A staff debrief into Child A’s death took place on July 30.
Letby is also accused of killing Child C on June 14 and Child D on June 22. She allegedly murdered Child E on August 4 and attempted to kill Child F the following day. Throughout this period, her continued Facebook searches for victims’ families have puzzled investigators.
In September, Letby asked colleagues about the twins’ parents. When told they “seem fine” and that the father “loves having [baby] home,” she replied, “That’s fantastic. She resembles !!”
Manchester Crown Court has imposed strict reporting restrictions to protect the identities of victims, parents, and witnesses. The trial is ongoing as the jury considers the digital and text evidence presented against Lucy Letby.
