Lucy Letby, 36, will face no new criminal charges over fresh allegations of baby deaths and collapses at two hospitals, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed.
CPS Drops Charges Against Letby After New Evidence Review
Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, announced the decision following the receipt of new evidence from Cheshire Constabulary in July 2025.
“We received a file of evidence relating to further allegations against Lucy Letby involving babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital and Liverpool Women’s Hospital,” Ferguson said.
Evidential Test Failed for Murder and Attempted Murder
After a thorough legal review, the CPS ruled the evidence did not meet the bar for prosecution. The dropped allegations included:
- Murder and attempted murder of two babies who died
- Attempted murder of seven babies who survived
“The evidential test was not met in any of those cases. This decision was made independently, based on the evidence and legal standards,” Ferguson added.
CPS Offers Support to Families Impacted
The CPS has reached out to the affected families, offering to meet and explain the decision. They said:
“Our thoughts remain with the families affected by this tragic situation.”
