New Child Cruelty Register to Crack Down on Abusers

Parents and caregivers who physically harm children are about to face a tough new crackdown. A groundbreaking child cruelty register will ensure lasting consequences for those who inflict cruelty, neglect, or abandonment on children in their care.

Harsh Restrictions Like Sex Offenders

Adults convicted of child cruelty will be monitored closely by police. They’ll face strict rules similar to registered sex offenders – including notifying authorities if they move, change identity, travel abroad, or live with children again after serving their sentence.

The register will also cover horrific crimes like female genital mutilation (FGM), ensuring these offenders are tracked and prevented from reoffending.

Campaigners Welcome the Tough New Laws

This move answers calls from campaigners like Paula Hudgell, adoptive mother of Tony Hudgell, who tragically became a double amputee after brutal neglect by his birth parents.

Jess Phillips, MP, Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls, said: “It is unforgivable that someone who is supposed to take care of a child would hurt them instead. We’ve listened to the Hudgells, and to the many families who feel the system hasn’t done enough to protect some of the most vulnerable people in society, and we are taking vital action.”

Government Rolls Out Wider Child Protection Measures

The register is part of a wider safety blitz. The government is bolstering civil orders, strengthening multi-agency protection teams, and formalising police disclosure of child sex offenders. New laws will improve information sharing and create a Child Protection Agency, alongside mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse.

Sentencing Minister Jake Richards MP added: “Child abusers do not deserve shielding; children do. The Child Cruelty Register will ensure these offenders are visible to the police, allowing authorities to see and act when risks arise. I thank Paula Hudgell for her remarkable fight to ensure no child should go through the life-altering abuse that her son Tony did.”

With these sweeping changes, the government vows to keep children safer from those who betray their trust and cause harm in the most heartless ways.
