Leon Germaine Worsfold, a 47-year-old man from Middlesbrough, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in her 30s. The attack took place in March 2022 at a hotel.

The conviction came after a detailed investigation conducted by Cleveland Police’s Major Enquiry Team. Worsfold was charged and appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Friday, 31st May. Despite the strong evidence presented, he denied the assault throughout the court proceedings, which caused the victim to relive the traumatic experience while giving her testimony.

Detective Inspector Matt Hollingsworth praised the victim’s courage, stating, “Leon Worsfold attacked a vulnerable woman. He assaulted and raped her; and at court, he continued to deny the incident, meaning the victim had to relive the ordeal and give evidence.” He added, “I would like to thank the woman for her bravery and unwavering strength throughout the investigation and court proceedings.”

Detective Inspector Hollingsworth also urged other victims of sexual offences to come forward, saying, “Anyone who has been a victim of sexual offences, no matter how long ago, is urged to report it. We will not tolerate violence of this nature and will keep putting offenders before the courts.”

Support is available for victims of sexual violence. To report a sexual offence, individuals can contact Cleveland Police on 101, or 999 in emergencies. Additionally, Teesside Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) offers free support and practical help for anyone affected by sexual violence or abuse, regardless of whether they choose to involve the police.
