Major Organised Crime Operation Crushed
Two men at the heart of a serious Class A drug ring spread across Aberdeen, Dundee, Fife, and Kinross have been slammed with hefty jail terms. Glasgow-based James Paterson, 34, and Ian Sweeney, 51, were convicted after a six-week High Court trial in Glasgow.
Paterson: The Drug Supplier and Money Launderer
Paterson was found guilty of supplying cocaine and heroin from December 2015 to December 2016, as well as orchestrating others to handle, transport, and adulterate drugs. He also laundered the vast profits and concealed the cash haul.
On Monday 20 March 2023, he was locked up for 14 years. His arrest on 16 December 2016 uncovered cocaine and heroin with a street value of a staggering £1.3 million and £55,000 in cash.
Sweeney: Tech-Savvy Spook Caught
Sweeney used technology to carry out counter-surveillance for Paterson between September and November 2016. He was given a 5-year prison sentence for his part.
Police Praise and Public Warning
“Lives and communities are ruined by drugs and these men had no thought for the misery they caused,” said Detective Inspector Julia Ogilvie from Police Scotland’s Organised Crime Unit.
“They were intimidating and greedy, caring for no one but themselves. Following a long investigation by dedicated officers, they have been brought to justice.”
