A booze-fuelled rampage on Christmas Day ended in tragedy when 25-year-old Aidan Chapman was killed. Anthony Gilheaney, 31, was locked up for life at London’s Old Bailey on Friday, 30 January, with a minimum of 37 years behind bars.
Raging Driver’s Christmas Day Chaos
On 25 December 2024, Gilheaney unleashed violence across central London. After being kicked out of a Shaftesbury Avenue nightclub, he punched two people outside. Then, spewing racial abuse, he rammed his car into a bystander before targeting four more men, seriously injuring them.
The carnage didn’t stop there. Gilheaney drove onto the pavement, striking several pedestrians. Among them was Aidan Chapman, who sadly died from his injuries on New Year’s Eve. Four others were hospitalised.
Police Hunt Ends in Quick Arrest
Detective Inspector Stephanie Dexter hailed the Met Police’s swift work. Using CCTV and dashcam footage, officers traced Gilheaney’s violent path. He was caught near Lincoln’s Inn Fields just 20 minutes after the chaos began.
“Aidan was a young man out celebrating the festive season when this appalling incident occurred,” said DI Dexter. “Gilheaney’s actions were deliberate and fuelled by rage and alcohol. We hope today’s sentence delivers some justice for the family.”
Family Speak Out on Heartbreaking Loss
Aidan’s family expressed their devastation and condemned Gilheaney’s violence.
“No parent should endure the hellish trauma of losing a child,” they said. “Gilheaney has left a dark void in our lives that can never be filled. We will never forgive him.”
The family also thanked police for their professionalism and support throughout the investigation.
Charges, Conviction and Life Sentence
- Gilheaney was found guilty on 19 December 2024 of murder, attempted murder, and wounding with intent.
- He had also faced charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and possession of a bladed article.
- The court dismissed his claim of memory loss about the night of terror.
Now, Gilheaney faces a minimum of 37 years in prison for a horrific, alcohol-fuelled Christmas rampage that shattered lives.
