A man who stabbed a woman in the back of the head before falsely claiming she had fallen has been jailed for 30 years after being convicted of attempted murder. Amir Khan, 26, of Villa Road, was sentenced on 7 July after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder at a trial in May. The court heard Khan attacked a woman known to him in Hockley last year, inflicting catastrophic injuries that have left her with permanent brain damage.
Claimed victim had fallen
Following the attack, Khan called the emergency services and claimed the woman had fallen over.
However, paramedics and attending police officers quickly became suspicious after determining that the severity of her injuries could not have been caused by an accidental fall.
Investigators established that the woman had been stabbed in the back of the head. Although the injuries were not fatal, they caused devastating and irreversible brain damage.
The victim now requires round-the-clock care as a result of the attack.
Arrested after inconsistencies uncovered
Khan was arrested shortly after the incident when officers identified inconsistencies in his account of what had happened.
During police interviews, he answered “no comment” to questions put to him by detectives. Despite extensive enquiries, the weapon used in the attack was never recovered.
Convicted of attempted murder
Following a trial, Khan was convicted of attempted murder in May. He was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment on 7 July.
Police said the sentence reflects the extreme seriousness of the attack and the lifelong impact it has had on the victim, who continues to require specialist care due to the severe injuries she sustained.
