Man Found Guilty of Brutal Croydon Murder – Tried to Fake Self-Defence

A man has been convicted of murdering a woman in Croydon following a detailed investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Simon Ghebremedhin, 33, of Streatham High Road, was found guilty of fatally stabbing 26-year-old Marjama Osman in her home.

Stabbed Victim Discovered Collapsed Outside Flat

The violent incident occurred on 31 May 2025. Police responded to reports after a passer-by found Marjama unconscious outside her flat on Frith Road. At the scene, Ghebremedhin was also present with a wound to his abdomen.

Marjama and Ghebremedhin were known to each other. On the day of the attack, he arrived at her flat where a violent argument broke out. CCTV footage captured Ghebremedhin smashing his own phone and banging on the door before Marjama let him inside.

What followed was a brutal assault. Ghebremedhin stabbed Marjama inside the property. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape but collapsed shortly afterwards.

Killer Tried to Manufacture Self-Defence Claim

Detective Inspector Aytac Necati said: “Our thoughts remain with Marjama’s family and friends. The evidence presented was graphic and distressing, compounding their grief. Ghebremedhin was a calculating murderer, attempting to deceive the police and the court. Fortunately, thorough detective work uncovered his deception.”

At hospital and during police questioning, Ghebremedhin asserted he had acted in self-defence, claiming Marjama attacked him first.

However, the investigation revealed contradictions. CCTV footage showed Ghebremedhin leaving the flat immediately after the stabbing without visible injuries. He subsequently returned inside, apparently to inflict a fake wound on himself.

Forensic medical experts confirmed his abdominal injury was self-inflicted. This decisive evidence dismantled his false defence at trial.

Conviction Delivered – Sentencing Scheduled

The jury at Inner London Crown Court returned a guilty verdict on 1 April. Sentencing is scheduled for 14 April.

Detective Inspector Necati added, “The Metropolitan Police remain committed to protecting Londoners from violence, particularly violence against women and girls. This prosecution demonstrates our resolve to remove dangerous offenders from the community.”
