A man has been charged following a dramatic protest at Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower. Daniel Day, from Palmerston Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, scaled the 96-metre-high clock tower on Saturday morning. Barefoot and waving a Palestinian flag, he perched on a ledge for over 16 hours, sparking chaos in central London.
Major Emergency Response After Protester Spotted on Ledged
The Metropolitan Police confirmed Day was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and trespassing on a protected site. The drama unfolded around 7.20am on March 8 when Day was first seen climbing the iconic landmark. By 11.30am, witnesses spotted him seated on a narrow ledge high above Westminster.
Police, London Fire Brigade, and Ambulance teams launched a large-scale emergency response. Using an Aerial Ladder, firefighters safely removed Day just after midnight on Sunday, ending the standoff.
Big Ben Shutdown and Road Closures Cause Major Disruption
The protest forced the closure of Bridge Street and the northern end of Westminster Bridge, snarling traffic around Parliament. Tours of Elizabeth Tower were cancelled as officials scrambled to manage the situation.
