A 29-year-old man was rushed to Southampton General Hospital after being hit by a car on a pelican crossing on Inner Avenue this afternoon.
The incident occurred just after 4:15pm on Friday when the man was struck by a black BMW 535 M Sport. The vehicle hit him on the front wing before he bounced off the windscreen.
Following the collision, police quickly closed the northbound carriageway near Southampton’s Crown and Magistrates Court, leading to significant traffic delays across nearby streets.
Paramedics from South Central Ambulance treated the man at the scene before transporting him to hospital with a serious head injury. His condition is currently described as life-threatening.
Collision investigators spent the evening gathering evidence at the scene. The road remained closed for over three hours but has since reopened, with traffic congestion gradually easing.
Police are urging witnesses to come forward. Officers want to speak to the driver involved as well as anyone who may have seen the crash or recorded it on dashcam.
PC Aaron Smith said: “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at this time and witnessed the collision between the car and the man. In addition, we would like to know what happened in the short time leading up to the collision.”
