Man Locked Up for Life After Random Street Murder in Leicester

A man has been jailed for life after a brutal, random attack that left a woman dead on a Leicester street. The chilling assault came just minutes after he crashed his car while high on cannabis.

Details of the Shocking Attack

Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, 24, received a minimum 21-and-a-half-year sentence for murdering 56-year-old Nila Patel on Infirmary Road. The horrifying attack happened on the afternoon of Tuesday, 24 June last year.

Leicestershire Police revealed Ahanonu had been driving dangerously moments before the stabbing, swerving across lanes and nearly hitting bus passengers. He then crashed his car in the city centre.

Ms Patel had just stepped off a bus nearby and was heading home when she was suddenly attacked. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but she tragically died from her injuries.

Family Pays Heartbreaking Tribute

“Our mum was not just a name in this case. She was a loving mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and the heart of our family. She was our best friend and our biggest supporter,” her children said.

“Since the day she was taken from us, our lives have been changed forever. We are still trying to process the shock and trauma of losing mum in such a sudden and violent way.”

“We will carry mum’s love, her guidance, her kindness and the memory of who she was with us every day for the rest of our lives and we will never stop wishing the world could have had more of her in it.”

Community in Shock as Killer Sentenced

Police called the murder a random, senseless act that has shaken the local community to its core. Ahanonu must serve at least 20 years before he can apply for parole.

This tragic case is a stark warning about the dangers of drug-impaired driving and random street violence in our cities.
