Mark Fox, 35, from Billingham, has been sentenced to 11 years and eight months in prison following a brutal knife attack on three Cleveland Police officers in Stockton. Fox pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent and was convicted of wounding with intent after a trial.

The violent incident took place on June 2, 2023, when officers responded to welfare concerns at a Corfe Crescent address in Billingham. Upon arrival, Fox lunged at the officers with a knife, causing puncture wounds to two officers and slashing a third. All three officers required hospital treatment and stitches for their injuries.

Teesside Crown Court handed down the sentence on July 15. Superintendent John Wrintmore condemned the attack as “shocking and truly disgraceful,” emphasising the daily risks police face while protecting the public. He stated, “Police put their lives at risk every day… no one should be attacked while performing their duties.” The officers involved were recognised for their bravery as regional winners at the National Police Bravery Awards 2024.

This attack is part of a troubling increase in assaults on police officers. Cleveland Police reported 245 assaults on officers in the past year, reflecting a nationwide rise. Across the UK, 79,091 officers were assaulted in 2023, marking the highest rate in a decade.

Superintendent Wrintmore called on the public and the criminal justice system to fully support emergency workers. He added, “Fox’s actions were extremely dangerous and reckless. This sentence sends a strong message – violence against police won’t be tolerated.” This case highlights the serious consequences of attacking those who serve to protect the community.
