Major Human Smuggling Supplier Nabbed at Amsterdam Airport
In a huge blow to human smuggling gangs, Dutch authorities caught a key supplier of small boats and engines to smugglers on Wednesday afternoon. The 44-year-old Turkish man was arrested at Amsterdam airport in a joint operation involving the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Eurojust, and Europol.
Suspect Backed Smugglers Making Deadly Channel Crossings
The suspect is accused of supplying boats and engines used by criminal groups to ferry migrants illegally across the Channel from northern France to the UK. Investigators revealed he shipped materials from Türkiye to storage hubs across Europe, then distributed them to smugglers operating mainly in Belgium and northern France.
These lethal crossings have already claimed over 50 lives in 2024 alone, thanks to unstable, unsafe boats supplied by suspects like him. The Netherlands has become a key transit hotspot for these smuggling supplies before they head to France or Belgium.
Extradition to Belgium Imminent as Agencies Join Forces
Dutch authorities confirmed the suspect will be extradited to Belgium to face charges of human smuggling and involvement in a criminal organisation. His capture was made possible by a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) set up through Eurojust, enabling Belgium and UK police to seamlessly share evidence and coordinate enforcement.
The operation was part of a wider Europol task force targeting small boat migrant smuggling across the Channel. Key players included:
