Daryll Pitcher, a 46-year-old county councillor from Norman Way, Wootton Bridge, appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court today to face serious sexual assault allegations.

Pitcher stands accused of two counts of rape and one count of indecent assault involving a girl under 14. The alleged offences are said to have occurred in Wootton between March 19, 1989, and March 20, 1992.

He was released on bail and is required to return to Isle of Wight Crown Court on August 22 for plea and trial preparation.

The councillor’s role in the community and the historic nature of the allegations have caused significant concern locally as the case continues to develop.
