Darren Sheen, director of Fusion Engineering, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to a massive fly-tipping incident in rural Staffordshire. The case was heard today at Stafford Crown Court, where Sheen faces allegations of dumping 27 tonnes of untreated waste on a quiet country lane in Curborough, near Lichfield.
On the morning of 19 January 2025, residents awoke to discover a towering 10-foot mound of rubbish stretching 27 yards across their only access road. The illegal fly-tip left several homes cut off and stranded overnight, causing significant disruption to the local community.
Lichfield District Council was forced to spend approximately £10,000 to clear the extensive waste from the lane. Investigations traced the dumped material back to Fusion Engineering, resulting in a serious legal confrontation for Sheen and his company.
Sheen faces nine charges, including depositing controlled waste likely to pollute or harm health, failing to transfer waste to authorised carriers, wilful obstruction of a highway, and a personal charge of dangerous driving.
Despite denying all charges, Sheen’s trial has been delayed until 8 March 2027 due to a backlog of cases and the complexity of the evidence involved. Judge Avik Mukherjee commented, “I’m conscious of how unsatisfactory this timeline is. Unfortunately, the reality of the current listing constraints leaves us with little alternative.” A pre-trial review is scheduled for 29 June 2026, when expert reports from both prosecution and defence will be examined.
Local residents affected by the fly-tip expressed frustration over the disruption and the lengthy wait for justice. One homeowner said, “It was disgraceful. We had no way out for hours until the council turned up. It’s appalling that this could take another two years to resolve.”
Lichfield District Council emphasised the seriousness of illegal dumping, stating, “Illegal dumping of waste is a serious crime that affects communities and places a financial burden on taxpayers. We are committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.”
