Severe flooding caused chaos in Fordingbridge and Godshill yesterday, prompting warnings for drivers to avoid the roads. Fallen trees, downed power lines, and deep standing water brought travel across the region to a standstill.
The Fordingbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team urged residents to avoid all non-essential journeys and to “stay home if possible.” They emphasized the dangerous water levels on roads throughout the area.
Near Ringwood, two cars became stranded in deep floodwaters close to Poulner Primary School and Tesco. Police condemned reckless lorry drivers who sped through flooded zones, creating wash that soaked pedestrians, damaged buildings, and put other vehicles at risk.
In Godshill, two drivers attempted to cross a flooded ford but were met with raging currents. One car was swept downstream and became stranded under a footbridge. Thanks to the swift response of local residents and Hampshire Fire and Rescue, the trapped driver was safely rescued.
This incident highlights the serious dangers of underestimating flood conditions on the roads.
Police have strongly urged drivers to avoid attempting to drive through flooded fords. “NEVER attempt to drive through fords in flood,” they stressed. “It’s far better to be late or abandon your journey than to risk your life.”
Motorists are advised to stay prepared by checking weather and road alerts, dressing appropriately for adverse conditions, and carrying essentials such as food, water, blankets, a torch, extra fuel, and a fully charged phone. Vehicles should also be inspected for flood readiness before travel.
“Cars can be replaced, people cannot,” reminded the Fordingbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team, urging all drivers to prioritise safety during severe weather.
