Five men have been convicted after a 15-year-old teenager was stabbed in a terrifying attack at a busy Hackney market street. The brutal incident left the victim fighting for his life and caused bystanders to flee in panic, with some fearing a terrorist incident.

The violent stabbing took place at 11.23pm on Thursday, 30 July 2020, in Broadway Market, E8, where families and nightlife crowds were enjoying the evening. Police responded swiftly, arriving within four minutes after receiving 22 emergency calls reporting a group involved in a knife brawl.

Officers found the teenage victim suffering multiple stab wounds. Despite first aid from a passerby, the boy was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The attackers fled the scene on bicycles before police arrived. A large machete was recovered nearby, but the actual stabbing knife was never found.

The Hackney Gangs Task Force launched an investigation, reviewing hours of CCTV footage to identify seven suspects involved in the attack. The footage showed the gang targeting the victim before launching the assault. Between August 2020 and May 2021, police conducted a series of pre-dawn raids to arrest the suspects.

William Guy and a 17-year-old were arrested in October 2020. Other suspects, including Kyle Taylor, Courtney Paul, and a 15-year-old, were taken into custody during August 2020. Courtney Paul was found with the knife, hidden in his bedroom, as captured on CCTV.

During the trial, it was revealed that the victim had brought a machete to London Fields but was chased and repeatedly stabbed on Broadway Market amid flying bottles and chairs. The attackers later searched news reports about the stabbing and discussed the incident on Snapchat, expressing concern about police charges due to CCTV evidence.

Police Constable Cal Gregory commented, “It is worrying to see the young ages of defendants who were armed with machetes. Tackling violence is the top priority of the Met. The victim did not support a prosecution but we pursued a case to hold these dangerous individuals accountable.”

The convicted men include Kyle Taylor, 26, who pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and other charges; Courtney Paul, 24, found guilty of GBH with intent and violent disorder; William Guy, 18, who pleaded guilty to GBH with intent and possession of a weapon; and two 17-year-olds found guilty of GBH with intent and violent disorder. One 15-year-old was acquitted of all charges.

The victim was also arrested and charged with violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon. He later pleaded guilty and was referred to the Hackney Youth Offender Panel.

The convicted individuals will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on 7 February 2022.
