Five Men Arrested as Police Smash Organised Vehicle Theft Ring in Essex
Major Raids Rock Basildon and Southend
Five men were hauled in after police unleashed a blitz of early morning raids across Basildon, Southend, Westcliff, and Leigh. Officers from five different teams smashed down doors using hydraulic tools and battering rams, targeting a suspected organised gang behind a string of vehicle thefts.
Stolen Car Keys, Drugs, and Cash Seized
The dawn raids recovered:
- Car keys and vehicle log books linked to stolen cars
- Several mobile phones
- Suspected class A and B drugs
- Tools used for stealing vehicles
- Bicycles and hundreds of pounds in cash
Details of the Arrests
- 33-year-old man from Leigh
- 31-year-old man from Westcliff
- Two men aged 27 and 34 from Southend
- 40-year-old man from Basildon who later turned himself in at Southend Police Station
Four face charges of conspiracy to steal motor vehicles and involvement in organised crime. The 34-year-old Southend man is held on suspicion of vehicle theft alone. All five remain in police custody undergoing questioning.
Property Shut Down Over Suspected Crime Hub
Essex Police slapped a closure notice on a property in Danbury Close, Leigh. The move comes amid ongoing anti-social behaviour and suspected criminal use of the premises. The closure bans unauthorised people from entering, with a court set to decide on a three-month shutdown and possession action within 48 hours.
Police and Housing Officials Speak Out
Sergeant Alex Farr, Southend Neighbourhood Policing Team:
“Preventing vehicle theft and catching those responsible is a key priority. This crime hits innocent people hard. We’re not just targeting the thefts but the wider organised networks selling stolen vehicles. Our strategy is working – vehicle theft is down and more cases are being solved across Essex.”
Anita McGinley, Housing Community Safety Manager at South Essex Homes:
“This closure order is vital to stamp out anti-social behaviour linked to this property. We’ll keep a close eye and urge locals to report any breaches.”
