A notorious drug dealer has been locked up for nearly six years after breaking a police officer’s finger in a violent bust in Ipswich. Ian Gayle, 56, a local with no fixed address, was caught red-handed during a dramatic arrest last July.

Wild Chase Ends on Wilberforce Street

Police stopped Gayle on 30 July in Wilberforce Street, but he tried to make a run for it. In the scuffle, he violently assaulted an officer, breaking the cop’s finger. A thorough search found drug wraps, phones, and cash on his person.

Operation Spotlight Scores Major Win

The arrest was part of Operation Spotlight, a crackdown on crime in Ipswich’s Maple Together Clear Hold Build area. The operation aims to clean up the streets and target drug dealers head-on.

Dealer Faces Heavy Sentence

On 14 February, Gayle pleaded guilty to multiple charges:

  • Possession with intent to supply Class A drug – cocaine
  • Possession with intent to supply Class B drug – amphetamine
  • Possession of cannabis
  • Assaulting an emergency worker

He was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison, sending a tough warning to those who threaten emergency workers and communities.
